January 6 to February 17 – Martha Shaw at Pt.2 Gallery: This solo exhibition offers a survey of Martha Shaw’s artistic practice from the 1980’s to the present. Intimate in scale, Shaw’s intuitive paintings explore the abstraction of her everyday world, and at the same time, allude to something subterranean, beyond what meets the eye. January 16 to March 2 – Liam Everett: The Ground at Altman Siegel: Engaging with questions regarding the influence of authorship, environment, and collective consciousness, this new body of work represents a significant aesthetic shift for the artist evolving from moments of chaos, growth, and discomfort. Atmospheric and layered, Everett’s paintings search for and amplify a sense of ambiguity, seeking the obliteration of ego. Altman Siegel is located at 1150 25th Street in San Francisco.

January 16 to April 21 – Hayv Kahraman: Look me in the Eyes and Saif Azzuz: Cost of Living at ICA SF: Informed by her own experience as an Iraqi/Kurdish refugee pressured to assimilate, Kahraman explores the experience of hypervisibility and invisibility of the othered body. In Look Me in the Eyes, Kahraman contends with the colonial gaze, pushing against erasure and imagining alternative ways of existing. Saif Azzuz will construct a mixed-media installation of readymade sculptures, large-scale wood assemblage, found objects, and paintings. Titled Cost of Living, the exhibition establishes current realities of gentrification and histories of settler colonialism as tandem forces to be examined and unsettled. The cost of living is both an indicator and a complaint, a framework and unequal reality that deals out unrelenting change. ICA SF is located at 901 Minnesota Street in San Francisco.

January 18 to 20 – FOG Design+Art at Fort Mason Center: Celebrating today’s most significant creatives and leading contributors to the worlds of design and visual arts, the fair assembles 45 leading international galleries; prominent 20th-century and contemporary design dealers; and a weekend of exciting programs. In celebration of its tenth anniversary the fair launches FOG FOCUS, an invitational designed to showcase art by young artists as an integral part of San Francisco’s creative ecosystem. January 19, 20 & 23 – Craig Calderwood: The Trash Oracle Sings, Torreya Cummings: Paradise Lost & Found and Quadir Parras: Spirit AIR Exhibitions at Recology: The Recology San Francisco Artist in Residence (AIR) Program is an art and education initiative that awards Bay Area artists access to discarded materials, an unrestricted stipend, and an individual studio space. These resources, along with comprehensive support, are provided to artists while they create a body of work and host studio visits during their four-month residency. These three exhibitions will present artwork made by Craig Calderwood, Torreya Cummings, and Qadir Parris during their residencies. Exhibition hours are Friday, January 19 from 5-8pm; Saturday, January 20 from 12-3pm; and Tuesday, January 23 from 5-7:30pm. January 16 to March 9 – Adia Millett: Reflections on Black at Haines Gallery: Blackness and the subtleties of moonlight inform Millett’s palette in new paintings and glass mosaics that examine our experiences of literal and metaphorical darkness. Presenting a shadowy world navigated through introspection, Reflections on Black asks the questions: What do we see when we close our eyes, and when do we choose to close them? January 19 to October 17 – Into View: New Voices, New Stories at Asian Art Museum: Curated by Naz Cuguoglu, this exhibition features recently acquired work by fourteen contemporary artists whose alternative narratives of mythology, history, and identity speak to a radically reimagined future. Artists included: Koon Wai Bong, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Wu Chi-Tsung, Michael Jang & Barry McGee, Cathy Lu, Jiha Moon, Younhee Paik, Nicole Pun, Stephanie Syjuco, TT Takemoto, Wesley Tongson, Rupy C.
