4/27 – 5/25 – San Francisco State University: This exhibition is already open with gallery hours Wednesdays through Saturdays, 11am to 4pm.

5/3 – 5/18 – San Jose Sate University Lift-Off MFA Exhibition: Presented at Ark Art Gallery in San Jose, Opening Reception, Friday May 3rd, 6-9pm. Gallery hours, Tuesday – Saturday 12 – 4pm.

5/4 – 5/26 – Compound Vision, Mills College 2013 MFA Thesis Exhibition: Will be on view at the Mills College Art Museum. The opening reception is Saturday May 4th, 6-9pm, regular Museum hours are Tuesday – Sunday 11 am – 4pm.

5/14 – 6/16 – Stanford University Presented at the Thomas Welton Stanford Art Gallery with an opening on May 14th from 10 am – 5pm. Regular viewing hours are Tuesday – Friday 10 am – 5 pm.

5/15 – 5/19 – San Francisco Art Institute MFA Thesis Exhibition: Presented at the Old Mint (88 5th Street), with a Gala Vernissage on Wednesday May 15th 5:30 – 10:30. Regular visiting hours are 11 am – 6 pm daily.

5/16 – 5/25 – California College of the Arts Graduate Exhibition is presented in the Nave of the San Francisco campus. The opening reception is Thursday May 16th, 6 – 10 pm, and open daily from 10 am – 7:30 pm.

5/17 – 6/16 – University of California at Berkeley: Presented at the BAM/PFA with an Opening Reception Friday, May 17th, 6-8 pm. Regular hours are Wednesday – Sunday 11 am – 5 pm.

Ongoing to June 2, 2013, Christian Marclay’s The Clock at SFMOMA: As SFMOMA prepares to close for a remodel and expansion they are presenting Christian Marclay’s celebrated video installation The Clock (2010). The video is composed of thousands of film clips referencing the time of day, intricately edited into a 24-hour-long montage that matches real time minute for minute — a tour de force of appropriation that is also a functioning timepiece. Marclay has been known since the late 1970s for his highly crafted remixes of time-based media, from vinyl records and tape loops to digital video. He spent three years assembling this staggering work, piecing together fragments from films both famous and obscure. On Saturdays/Sundays in May SFMOMA will offer continuous 24-hour screenings in order to view the piece in full, check here for exact times. May 11 – June 22, Andy Vogt, Submerged on the Surface at Eli Ridgway Gallery, 172 Minna Street: Based on the sculptural potential of lumberyard detritus and repurposed rough-cut Douglas Fir lath, Vogt’s works take on the materials in both graphic and architectural terms as well as the gray area between. His vision of well-worn, structural demise finds a language in the crisp edges and broken off-cuts of discarded plywood and lath and their shadows.The artist will transform the gallery space producing a mixture of site specific installation, sculpture and drawing using his found palette of materials. Here, shadows become plans for sculptures and edges of lath emerge as a drawing medium in works that blur the ephemeral and permanent. Opening reception, Saturday May 11, 4-7 pm.

May 16th – 19th, artMRKT and ArtPadSF Art Fairs: There are two contemporary art fairs coming to San Francisco in May. Art Fairs offer visitors a chance to see artists and galleries from outside San Francisco, as well all of the local galleries all in one place. artMRKT San Francisco located at the Fort Mason Center, features 70 galleries from around the globe showcasing historically important work alongside relevant contemporary pieces and projects. The Opening Night Preview Reception benefits the de Young and Legion on Honor museums. ArtPadSF is located at the Phoenix hotel and features new-on-the-scene galleries as well as highly regarded established galleries. Hotel rooms will be transformed into gallery booths by 40 national and international galleries. The ArtPadSF Opening Night Reception benefits the SFMOMA SECA Art Award exhibition. 4/21 – 5/11: San Francisco State University MFA Thesis Exhibition, Fine Arts Building, Fine Arts Gallery, 1600 Holloway Avenue: Nine emerging artists present new work in ceramics, painting, photography, textiles, printmaking and multimedia. Showcasing the creativity and diversity in the Art Department’s 3-year MFA program. Gallery open Wednesday – Saturdays 11am – 4pm.

4/28 – 5/27: The Last Show on Earth, Mills College MFA Thesis Exhibition, Mills College Art Museum, 5000 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland: The culmination of 2 years of study by a promising group of emerging artists, The Last Show on Earth alludes to both predictions of an imminent global apocalypse and the smaller cataclysm of the completion of graduate school. Museum open Tues – Sunday 11 am – 4pm.

5/10 – 5/19: California College of Arts MFA Exhibition, 1111 Eight Street at 16th: The exhibition features works by nearly 50 artists graduating this spring. The MFA exhibition is part of a larger year-end celebration that includes thesis exhibitions by all seven CCA graduate programs. Exhibition open 10 am – 7:30 pm daily.

5/11 – 5/13: San Francisco Art Institute MFA Graduate Exhibition at The Phoenix Hotel, 601 Eddy Street: The exhibition showcases student work that continues the school’s legacy of innovative thinking and experimentation. Nearly 100 graduating MFA students working in painting, photography, printmaking, film, sculpture, installation, digital media, performance and across disciplines will transform the iconic Phoenix Hotel for a limited-engagement exhibition. Exhibition open Noon – 10pm daily.

5/15 – 6/17: Never Odd or Even, Stanford University MFA Thesis exhibition, Thomas Welton Stanford Art Gallery, 419 Lausen Mall, Stanford Campus: Never Odd or Even is a n exhibition of artwork created by 5 graduating artists for their final MFA Thesis. This exhibit will have a second installation and viewing at Root Division 3175 17th Street, May 23 – June 1, open Wednesday through Saturday 2-6pm.

5/17 – 5/20 Over these 4 days San Francisco will host 3 different art fairs with a variety of events and performances. Here are the two fairs we recommend: ArtPadSF at the iconic Phoenix Hotel is a boutique art fair that focuses on emerging and contemporary art from the Bay Area and beyond. ArtMRKT at the Concourse Exhibition Center is a contemporary and modern art fair featuring 70 galleries from around the globe.

In Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge there are two International Orange exhibits that are a must see: May 14th – August 4th, International Orange: The Bridge Re-Imagined at the Mills Building, 200 Montgomery Street. Presented by the San Francisco Arts Education Project, students from participating elementary, middle and high schools around the city will display paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, and mixed media creations honoring the bridge. May 25th – October 28th, International Orange a FOR-SITE Foundation project at historic Fort Point features work by 16 contemporary artists presenting new work responding to the bridge as icon, historic structure, and conceptual inspiration.
