February 10 to March 23 – Stefan Kürten: Of Sunsets and Beautiful Endings at Hosfelt Gallery: Stefan Kürten’s intricate paintings of architecture and domestic interiors are enigmatic and atmospheric. Important themes in his work are flowers, wallpaper-like patterns. His work refers to places of beauty, comfort and safety in a complex and sometimes frightening world. In this exhibition of new work he seeks to express a mood from his childhood, one that evokes a worry-free sense of happiness… like an endless summer, full of beautiful promise. February 22 to March 30 – Nimah Gobir, Dana Robinson, Sheena Rose: Minted, Tinted at Johansson Projects: This group exhibition features three artists exploring Black female identity through figuration. Nimah Gobir draws from her own family’s personal, biographical histories. Dana Robinson addresses ownership and nostalgia through combining and reproducing vintage Black media. Sheena Rose challenges stereotypes in her colorful buoyant paintings of fashion and sports. Johansson Projects is located at 2300 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland.

Ongoing to March 9 – Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller: Ambient Jukebox & Other Stories at Fraenkel Gallery: This exhibition features new work by multidisciplinary artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller. Atmospheric, dreamlike, and theatrical, the duo’s work often explores how sound affects perception. Their immersive installations utilize audio, theatrical elements, and narrative direction to create large-scale environments that augment the viewer’s reality. February 24, 3-5pm – 2024 Jane Green Endowed Lecture in Art History at Mills College Art Museum: In conjunction with the special exhibition Look Up to the Sky, Hung Liu’s Legacy of Mentoring Women Artists (on view now), this year’s Jane Green Endowed Lecture in Art History features a conversation with three artists mentored by Hung Liu (1948-2021), acclaimed Chinese American artist and beloved professor of art at Mills College. Dorothy Moss, founding director of the Hung Liu Estate, will moderate the conversation among artists Rosana Castrillo Díaz, Nicole Phungrasamee Fein, and Mel Prest, former students of Hung Liu and alumnae of the Mills College MFA Program in Studio Art. Ongoing to March 2 – Rohini Devasher: Sol Drawings at Gallery Wendi Norris: Devasher’s captivating and research-driven body of work chronicles a decade as an eclipse chaser and amateur astronomer. The copper on Earth formed through the explosion of stars, which catapulted the metal onto our planet more than four billion years ago. Using this material from the cosmos, the artist adorns copper sheets with markings inspired by astrophotography through interventions like acid washing, embossment, and fumage, or the natural impressions of candle smoke. Intricate and luminous, these works with copper invite close-looking and contemplation. Gallery Wendi Norris is located at 436 Jackson Street in San Francisco.
This exhibition is concurrently on view with Devasher’s first U.S. solo institutional exhibition, One Hundred Thousand Suns, at the Minnesota Street Project Foundation at 1201 Minnesota Street.
